A Kid’s Insight into the Devil
Saturday, March 08, 2008
My kid says the funniest things. She’s a little prophet in the making, and has a keen sensitivity to the things of the spirit, but needs a lot of teaching. (Don’t we all!)
Here’s an example: I couldn’t find my cell phone this morning. She said she saw it one minute and not the next. She basically misplaced it and I wanted to see if she’d take responsibility for it. I asked her, “Do you think the devil came and got it?”
She considered the question, then she said, “Well, it couldn’t be the devil because the house isn’t on fire.”
Hmm. I couldn’t quite figure that one out. “What do you mean the house isn’t on fire? What does that have to do with the devil stealing my cell phone?”
Here was her reasoning: Hell is full of fire, and the devil lives in hell, so the devil must be on fire.
OK, so she’s admittedly a little off, but it opened the door for me to explain to her that the devil doesn’t take up residence in hell. Rather, he roams about like a roaring lion seeking whom he may devour. It gave me the opportunity to explain to her that the devil can only be in one place at one time, but that he has lots of demons to do his dirty work.
What a great kid. (How many little girls know the spirit of Jezebel is the enemy of the prophets? She does and she finds it fascinating.) Of course, I explained that the devil isn’t in the business of coming to people’s homes and stealing their cell phones, but he does influence people to do things like that.
Isn’t it fun to have kids and get their insights into spiritual things? What have your kids said recently that was insightful, funny, etc.
